Over 150 people turned up for a wide ranging forum at the South Church in Portsmouth last night. The forum, organized by Nancy Brown of Seacoast Alliance for Democracy and Amy Antonucci of Seacoast Peace Response, was titled"Talk Before We Attack-What Does It All Mean?" and was open to anyone who wanted to speak, sing, or perform.
There were many takers as one by one and sometimes in twos and threes over forty people came to the stage and spoke, sang, or performed their piece.
The forum started off with a song by Susie Burke of South Berwick, Maine and Kent Allyn of Kittery, Maine. Organizers Brown and Antonucci then introduced themselves and explained how the process would go. All present were entitled to take the stage for up to three minutes with rebuttle time later if time allowed.
Gary Langley, a Vietnam veteran and photographer from Dover read a poem that included the lines "Facism...now hangs in the hall". Guy Chichester put forth that "All wars are cooked up", including WW2. Craig Henne, of Elliot, Maine claimed that protesting only "aided the enemy". Joann Lipshires read a poem called "My Birthday, February 24th" and in it she talked about an "international turkey shoot....in the tanks a more private death by cremation". Pat Morse of Barrington told a story about an American flag that got wrapped around a car's driveshaft and wore a hole in the gas tank. "Why not just drop flags?", he asked.
There was also a group of three women who performed on drums, and another group of women, Macy Morse, Shannon Darr, and Cathy Wolff, who had a short skit about errosion of civil liberties and how politicians should be held accountable.
The forum ended with about two thirds of those attenting gathered in a circle holding hands while Kent Allyn played his guitar and sang.
